The process of refinishing hardwood floors is a difficult one, and one that will take some doing on your part. This involves actually completely renewing the surface of your floor, by washing, sanding and restaining, which means a lot of work on your part. But as a result of refinishing hardwood floors, you’ll find that you can really recapture the brilliant original look of your floor. By committing to this process, you can restore your hardwood floors to looking just as brilliant as the first day you moved into your house, and you’ll really be amazed at the results. All you have to do, is make sure that you have the right tools on hand to get the job done.
The first and most important part of refinishing hardwood floors, is just preparing the floor for the work that you’ll be doing. That means you’re going to want to remove all rugs and furniture. Then you’re going to want to give the floor a good complete wash, so that the surface is completely clean. You’re also going to want to go all along the surface of your floorboards, and be sure that there are no items sticking up from the wood. This can be anything from nails to staples. Staples can easily be pulled, so that you’re able to sand the floor later on. Nails are usually too difficult to pull, and you’ll need to pound them further down into the wood so that they’re hardly noticeable.
From there, you’re going to want to get a floor sander of some kind. You’re going to want a large full size model, as well as a smaller hand machine. The large full size model can be used to completely sand the entire top of your floor. This way, you can completely scrape off the old stain coating, and get down to the natural wood underneath. Plus you can even out the structure, and create a much flatter and more comfortable wood surface. But large sanders are difficult to use up against a wall, so it’s best to use a hand sander, so that you’re able to really get those hard to reach areas. Just make sure you’ve taken care of any nails or staples, otherwise they will rip right though your sandpaper.
Then you’re ready to actually restain your floor, to give it that great finish. This is the whole point of refinishing hardwood floors, as it affords you the opportunity to completely change the look. You can use a darker stain or a lighter one, to have your floors take on a whole new fantastic look. It’s just a matter of finding the right type of stain that you like the best. You’re going to want to either get small sample packs, or you’re going to want to find small pails of the type of stain you feel you want to use, and you want to try out the color in your room. This way, you can find the perfect combination to suit your decor, so that you have the perfect possible floor.
